United States braces for major central tornado outbreak

A multi-day severe weather outbreak is peaking across the central United States on Monday, May 18, 2026, with more than 30 million people under threat from tornadoes, destructive winds, and very large hail. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a rare Level 4 of 5 moderate risk for parts of central and northeastern Kansas into far southeastern Nebraska, including Topeka. Forecasters warn that supercell thunderstorms capable of strong to intense tornadoes are likely. On Sunday, May 17, storms produced over a dozen tornado reports and more than 100 hail and wind reports from Nebraska and South Dakota into Iowa and Minnesota.
