United States: Meta cuts 8,000 jobs for AI push

United States-based Meta Platforms is preparing this week to cut about 8,000 jobs, roughly 10% of its global workforce, as part of a major restructuring to fund a large expansion in artificial intelligence infrastructure. In addition, management will permanently eliminate about 6,000 open positions that had not yet been filled, consolidating a sharp reduction in headcount and future hiring. The company is redirecting resources to support a planned investment of $145 billion in data centers, chips and other infrastructure linked to AI. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has told executives that rapid advances in automation and generative AI now allow smaller teams to complete complex projects that once required many more engineers working for months. Inside the company, employees describe a climate of deep anxiety and exhaustion as the new round of layoffs approaches. Staff report a workplace marked by burnout, fears over job security and a sense that the environment has become increasingly toxic. Tensions have intensified following the introduction of aggressive monitoring software that tracks mouse movements and keyboard activity in real time. Management says it uses the data to train and refine internal AI models and to measure efficiency, but many workers view the tools as an intrusive form of surveillance and a direct threat to their position. Industry observers in Silicon Valley are watching closely as other large technology companies assess Meta’s move.
