Nebraska braces for supercells bringing EF2 tornado risk

Nebraska and parts of the central Plains and Upper Midwest face a significant severe weather threat on Sunday, May 17, 2026, according to the U.S. Storm Prediction Center. An Enhanced Risk, level 3 of 5, covers portions of Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa, including the cities of Lincoln and Omaha. Forecasts call for supercell thunderstorms capable of producing large to very large hail, damaging winds of 75 miles per hour or more, and a few tornadoes, possibly up to EF2 strength. The National Weather Service in Omaha has issued a Tornado Watch, with storms expected to move rapidly, shortening response times for residents.
