U.S. health authorities are monitoring 41 people nationwide for possible exposure to the Andes strain of hantavirus following an outbreak linked to the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius. All 18 American passengers from the vessel are being held under active observation at the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, after two were transferred from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. None currently show symptoms. The outbreak, detailed by European health officials on May 16, has produced 11 cases and three deaths. That same day, the World Health Organization warned more infections are likely due to the virus’s up-to-42-day incubation period.
