DOJ Sues California Over Undocumented Students' Tuition Benefits

Sacramento — The Justice Department filed a lawsuit Thursday in federal court challenging California laws that grant undocumented immigrants in-state tuition and other financial aid. The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento, names Gov. Gavin Newsom and state university boards and seeks to bar enforcement for roughly 80,000 undocumented students. The DOJ cited federal law and presidential executive orders in arguing the benefits conflict with federal policy and said the state’s rules discriminate against U.S. citizens from other states.
