Schumer faces revolt as shutdown deal advances | JQJO

Under intensifying intraparty pressure, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer faced open revolt after eight members joined Republicans to advance a deal to end the nation’s longest shutdown, defying his demand to secure health insurance subsidies. Progressives urged him to step aside, touting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for a 2029 Senate run, as polls put his approval at the bottom among Washington leaders. Schumer blasted the compromise as a Republican bill, while House leader Hakeem Jeffries backed Schumer’s leadership but vowed to fight the deal. Governors and lawmakers piled on, calling for new leadership.
