Democrats score coast to coast wins amid shift | JQJO

A year after Kamala Harris’s concession, Democrats shook off despair with coast to coast wins that exceeded expectations. Abigail Spanberger became Virginia’s first woman governor; Mikie Sherrill turned a tight New Jersey race into a rout; and in New York, Zohran Mamdani defeated Andrew Cuomo to become the city’s first Muslim mayor amid the highest turnout in decades. Gavin Newsom’s redistricting measure passed as voters still waited in line. A sharper, combative posture—from mass protests to a shutdown standoff and hardball map fights—fuels momentum even as ideological rifts and 2026 dangers remain.
