Vermont state senator Samuel Douglass resigned Friday after Politico published racist and antisemitic messages from a Young Republicans group chat, marking another consequence in a scandal that also saw New York’s Young Republicans lose their charter. The 26-year-old apologized, said his resignation takes effect Monday, and cited his family’s safety. Douglass, the only elected official known to be in the chat, faced calls to step down from Governor Phil Scott and Senate Minority Leader Scott Beck. He acknowledged offensive remarks and pledged to mend bridges, while saying he and his wife received threats.
