Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton was shut Saturday for a U.S. military exercise firing live artillery over the freeway, severing the coastal link between San Clemente and Oceanside. The closure began at 11 a.m. and was slated to last until 3 p.m., but the CHP reopened lanes by noon, planning a traffic break for the 1:30 p.m. firing, officials said. Caltrans said the White House directed the event. Drivers face long detours via Interstate 15, and rail service on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink is expected to be disrupted.
