“First Rabbits, Now The Squirrels?”: ‘Zombie Squirrels’ With Oozing Flesh Terrify US Homeowners

Reports of squirrels with disfiguring tumors, caused by squirrel pox (squirrel fibroma), are increasing in North America. The condition, spread through biting insects and human-provided food, causes wart-like growths. While usually survivable, severe cases can be fatal. Experts advise eliminating standing water to control mosquito vectors and avoiding supplemental feeding to prevent the virus's spread. The disease is species-specific, rarely affecting other animals, including humans.
