JWST Delivers Bad News About Life on TRAPPIST-1 Planet

New James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations reveal that the exoplanet TRAPPIST-1d, previously considered potentially habitable, lacks an Earth-like atmosphere. Analysis of two transits showed a flat spectrum, indicating no detectable atmospheric features like methane, carbon dioxide, or water. While extremely thin atmospheres or those obscured by high clouds remain possibilities, the findings significantly reduce the likelihood of TRAPPIST-1d supporting life. However, the study suggests that outer planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system might still retain atmospheres, leaving the search for habitable exoplanets ongoing.
