Numerous wild rabbits in Fort Collins, Colorado, have been found with grotesque facial growths caused by the cottontail papilloma virus (CRPV). This virus creates benign tumors, but can progress to cancer. CRPV spreads via insects like mosquitoes and ticks, not direct contact between rabbits. Colorado Parks and Wildlife advises avoiding contact with infected rabbits, although it's not contagious to humans. Infected rabbits often starve due to the growths obstructing their senses and feeding.
