Australia to recognize Palestinian state, leaving US increasingly isolated among key allies

Australia and New Zealand are considering recognizing a Palestinian state in September, joining the UK, France, and Canada. This decision comes amidst international condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza, which have caused a severe humanitarian crisis. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that recognition is predicated on assurances from the Palestinian Authority regarding Hamas's role and other conditions. The move further isolates the US, which opposes the recognition. New Zealand's decision is pending a cabinet meeting. The UN has warned of famine in Gaza, with rising hunger-related deaths, particularly among children.
