WHO Recommends New Injectable HIV Prevention

The WHO released new guidelines recommending twice-yearly injectable lenacapavir (LEN) for HIV prevention, a significant advancement in PrEP options. LEN offers a long-acting alternative to daily pills, particularly beneficial for those facing adherence challenges. The guidelines, announced at the IAS 2025 conference, also simplify HIV testing procedures and integrate HIV services with other healthcare areas. WHO urges immediate implementation of LEN alongside other PrEP options to combat stagnant HIV prevention efforts and the 1.3 million new infections in 2024.
