The Dead Sea, located in the Middle East, holds the title of Earth's lowest point on dry land, sitting approximately 1,300 feet below sea level. Its depth fluctuates daily due to evaporation. Unlike a sea, it's a large saltwater lake, named for the absence of life in its waters. Formed along the Dead Sea Fault, a transform fault similar to California's San Andreas Fault, its formation is debated, with theories suggesting either a 'pull-apart basin' or a 'drop-down basin' as the cause of its unique low elevation.
