History and art of Pope’s summer residence in Castel Gandolfo

Pope Leo XIV will spend his summer holidays at Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence near Rome, from July 6th to 20th and August 15th to 17th. The residence, built on the ruins of a Roman villa, has hosted popes since 1626. While residing in Villa Barberini, the Pope's stay will cause temporary closures of some areas within the Castel Gandolfo museum complex, including the Antiquarium and Vatican Observatory. The main museum complex, including the Apostolic Palace, remains open to the public with some schedule adjustments.
