Poland starts spot checks at German border

Poland has initiated random border checks at 52 crossings with Germany and 13 with Lithuania until August 5th, citing a need to combat illegal immigration. This follows similar stricter German controls. Polish officials emphasize the checks target specific vehicles and are temporary, a response to a rise in asylum seekers and migrants attempting to enter the EU via Poland. The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated these actions benefit all EU members by securing the EU's eastern border. Germany also expressed the need for border protection but stressed the desire for a temporary, EU-wide solution.
