Pixar's attempt to erase Elio's queer themes doomed it

Pixar's "Elio" debuted with the lowest opening weekend in the studio's history, despite positive reviews. The Hollywood Reporter reveals internal conflicts and creative changes significantly altered the film. Original director Adrian Molina's version, featuring a more prominent queer-coded lead and environmental themes, was reportedly altered after test screenings and internal concerns. This led to the departure of Molina and star America Ferrera, along with other talent. The resulting film, critics argue, lacks substance and is a product of Disney's prioritizing relatability over originality and concerns about LGBTQ+ representation.
