A new study published in The Lancet Global Health reveals that approximately 17% of cancer medications sampled across Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, and Cameroon were substandard or counterfeit. Researchers from a US and pan-African group found incorrect active ingredient levels in nearly 200 products tested from hospitals and pharmacies. This is the first large-scale study documenting this issue with anticancer drugs in Africa. The problem stems from complex regulatory challenges and inadequate testing facilities. The World Health Organization is working with affected countries to address the issue, focusing on improved regulation, screening technologies, and training.
