Kenyan Fishmongers Face HIV Drug Shortages After Aid Cuts

Read, Watch or Listen

Kenyan fishmongers of the 'No Sex for Fish' cooperative, who defied sexual exploitation to build their business, face new hardships. Flooding devastated their village and disrupted their fishing. Eleven members are HIV-positive, and recent U.S. aid cuts have reduced their access to antiretroviral drugs, causing anxiety and uncertainty about their health. While the U.S. insists drug supplies won't be interrupted, supply chain issues and clinic closures due to job losses among health workers are creating significant challenges. The women are relying on informal support systems to cope while hoping for future assistance.
