A fungi that can ‘eat you from the inside out’ could spread as the world heats up

New research predicts a significant expansion of infection-causing Aspergillus fungi into new regions due to climate change. The study, using computer simulations, shows Aspergillus species will spread across North America, Europe, China, and Russia, impacting global health. Aspergillus infections, already killing 2.5 million annually, are difficult to diagnose and treat, with limited antifungal medicines. The warming climate increases not only the fungi's range but also its temperature tolerance. Experts emphasize the urgent need for increased research and preparedness, highlighting the under-researched nature of fungal diseases and the potential threat to global health and food security.
