Scientists from the University of Bath linked longer lifespans in mammals to larger brains and more complex immune systems. Their research, published in Scientific Reports, analyzed 46 mammal species, finding that those with longer lifespans possessed more immune-related genes. While larger brains generally correlated with longevity, exceptions like mole rats and bats highlighted the significant role of a robust immune system. The study suggests that gene family expansions, particularly in immune and DNA repair genes, contribute to lifespan extension through enhanced cellular response and damage repair. Further research will focus on cancer-related genes.
