Domestic cats' instinct to hunt, stemming from their evolutionary history, often leads them to bring home dead prey as "gifts." This behavior is theorized to be maternal, mimicking wild cats feeding their kittens, or a preference for eating prey in the safety of their home. A 2023 study linked hunting frequency to cat personality; dominant cats brought home more prey. Environment and owner management also influence hunting behavior. To reduce this, keeping cats indoors, removing bird feeders, and providing alternative hunting stimulation are suggested. This is also crucial for wildlife conservation and cat health.
