A Canadian study analyzing six million medical records found that middle-aged and older adults seeking hospital care due to cannabis use were almost twice as likely to develop dementia within five years compared to the general population. Even when compared to those seeking care for other reasons, cannabis users still showed a 23% higher dementia risk. The study notes limitations, including the inability to determine cannabis usage amounts and doesn't establish causality between cannabis use and dementia.
