A study in *Neurology* reveals a strong link between heavy alcohol consumption (eight or more drinks weekly) and brain damage. Researchers found a 133% increased risk of hyaline arteriolosclerosis, lesions impacting memory and thinking, among heavy drinkers compared to non-drinkers. Former heavy drinkers also showed higher odds of tau tangles (linked to Alzheimer's), reduced brain mass, and impaired cognition. Heavy drinkers died an average of 13 years earlier than non-drinkers. The study, while not proving causation, highlights the significant negative impact of heavy drinking on brain health.
