Food banks already strained by inflation and federal cuts are bracing for a surge as the nearly monthlong government shutdown threatens to halt SNAP funding in November, affecting about 42 million people. Leaders from Oregon to Washington, D.C., say demand now far outstrips supply—pantries can replace just one of every nine federally supported meals. Visits have jumped 50% in Oregon and doubled around the capital. In Beltsville, Md., a giveaway for unpaid federal workers ran out after 45 minutes, echoing warnings that children, seniors and rural communities will go hungry if contingency funds remain untapped.

A Jets celebration in Cincinnati ended a day that began on a somber note. Longtime center Nick Mangold died at 41 after battling kidney disease, and head coach Aaron Glenn opened his postgame remarks by remembering him as “the heart and soul of the team.” Glenn, who scouted during Mangold’s 11 Jets seasons, offered prayers to Mangold’s family and called him “a true Jet.” Mangold, a two-time All-Pro and member of the team’s Ring of Honor, will likely be honored further when the Jets return home after their Week 9 bye.

The winless Jets roared back Sunday to edge the Bengals 39-38 in Cincinnati, their first victory under first-year coach Aaron Glenn. Breece Hall ran for two scores and, with under two minutes left, threw a four-yard touchdown to Mason Taylor. Justin Fields, back under center after last week’s benching, threw for 244 yards as New York piled up 502 yards; a replay-overturned two-point pass to Isaiah Davis proved crucial. Joe Flacco had 223 yards and two TDs, but Cincinnati—now 3-5—blew leads of 31-16 and 38-24 before a final Jets stop sealed the comeback amid defensive lapses.

A U.S. guided-missile destroyer, the USS Gravely, docked in Port-of-Spain as Washington increases military pressure on Venezuela. The ship will stay until Thursday for joint training, officials said, while the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford moves closer to Venezuela. President Nicolás Maduro denounced the buildup; President Donald Trump accused him, without evidence, of leading the Tren de Aragua gang. Reactions in Trinidad and Tobago are mixed: Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar supports the presence, while demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. Embassy. The visit comes a week after a U.S. Embassy threat warning; Caricom has called for dialogue.

Breece Hall powered a stunning Jets comeback in Cincinnati, rushing for two second-half touchdowns and, with 1:54 left, floating a 4-yard score to Mason Taylor to seal a 39-38 win—their first of the season. Justin Fields threw for 244 yards and a TD as New York, missing Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner, piled up 502 yards, including 254 on the ground. Joe Flacco accounted for three Bengals touchdowns, but Cincinnati fell to 3-5 amid boos. The victory gave coach Aaron Glenn his first win and came the same weekend Nick Mangold died at 41.

The Navy began evacuating hundreds of U.S. citizens and their pets from Guantánamo Bay to Florida as Hurricane Melissa threatened eastern Cuba. With more than 4,000 people on the base, commanders ordered rolling departures starting Friday, expanding Saturday to non-mission-essential civilians. Four charter jets and a C-17 from Charleston were slated to move about 1,000 people this weekend. Families, some pushing strollers and carrying dogs, lined up in the heat for flights to Miami for CBP processing. Activities were canceled as projections showed Melissa reaching the base before dawn Wednesday.

On Face the Nation, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries blamed a “Trump, Republican shutdown” now in day 26, urging bipartisan talks while rejecting a GOP funding bill he says would gut health care. He warned premiums could spike without extending Affordable Care Act tax credits, saying Congress could push back open enrollment to help. As 750,000 federal workers go unpaid and services strain, he pressed to reopen government. Jeffries defended his late endorsement of Zohran Mamdani, backed NYPD leadership, called Donald Trump an “existential threat,” and said his “rigged elections” remark refers to Republican gerrymandering.

Ontario’s ad using Ronald Reagan’s 1987 remarks on tariffs drew fire for selective editing, but a fact-check finds the spot captured his broader message: trade barriers spark retaliation and hurt Americans. The ad reordered quotes without changing their meaning and omitted Reagan’s acknowledgment of a narrow, temporary tariff action against Japanese semiconductors. Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a $75 million buy, airing during the first two World Series games before pausing. The Reagan Foundation called the ad misleading; the ruling: Mostly False.

President Donald Trump is pushing ahead with a $300 million plan to build a White House ballroom, mounting a campaign-style fundraising drive led by his former campaign finance chief, Meredith O’Rourke. Her team is approaching executives, corporations, and Republican lobbyists who backed Trump’s 2024 campaign and inauguration, according to people familiar with the effort. The high-profile, controversial project is being pitched as a chance to support what Trump has described as his gift to the country.

At the ASEAN 2025 summit in Malaysia, Donald Trump brushed off a press conference with Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, quipping that reporters’ “boring” questions could wait; Lula urged postponing questions to save time. Their meeting centered on Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, including a 50% levy on Brazilian imports, which he said he was open to negotiating. Tension flickered over Jair Bolsonaro: Trump praised him and snapped it was “none of your business” whether his case was on the agenda. Bolsonaro was convicted in September over the 2022 election and is under house arrest; he denies the charges.
