President Donald Trump scrapped a planned Budapest meeting with Vladimir Putin and, aboard Air Force One in Malaysia, said he wouldn’t “be wasting my time.” He praised their past rapport but called the situation “very disappointing,” despite a campaign vow to secure a ceasefire within 24 hours—now 279 days unmet. A June summit in Alaska devolved into “a shouting match,” and Washington has since tightened sanctions. A February Oval Office session with Volodymyr Zelensky, widely seen as a diplomatic disaster, alarmed Kyiv and European allies. The cancellation is widely viewed as a setback; aides cited “bad timing.”

Jon Stewart says he wants to keep hosting The Daily Show, telling David Remnick at the New Yorker Festival that “we’re working on staying,” even as his contract is up in December. Stewart, who returned to the show in early 2024, joked that Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison is his “new boss.” He has criticized CBS’ plan to end The Late Show and a 60 Minutes settlement with Donald Trump, linking them to “fear,” and mocked Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension with a satirical episode. He vowed to continue.

On Sunday Night Football, Aaron Rodgers faces the only NFL team he's never played — the Green Bay Packers — in his first meeting with his former franchise as the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback. With 18 seasons and 475 Packers touchdown passes behind him, a win would make him the fifth quarterback to defeat all 32 teams. Rodgers says he holds no animosity; Jordan Love recalls learning from him. Expect the pass rush to matter, with T.J. Watt and Micah Parsons, and striking looks: Pittsburgh's 1933 throwbacks vs. Green Bay's all-white "Winter Warning" combo, 3-0 so far.

London police arrested Ethiopian national Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu in Finsbury Park after he was mistakenly freed from a Chelmsford prison, a blunder officials called an egregious failure. The convicted sex offender and asylum-seeker, sentenced in September to 12 months for offenses including the assault of a 14-year-old, had been misclassified for release instead of transfer to immigration detention. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he will be deported “as soon as possible.” The case, which earlier sparked large anti-migrant protests and counterrallies, has prompted strengthened release checks and the removal of a prison officer pending investigation.

Nine months into his term, President Trump’s foreign policy is a mix of headline wins and volatile turns. European defense spending is rising; he secured a fragile Gaza cease-fire and the release of 20 hostages. Yet he slapped new tariffs on Canada over a TV ad, veered from fury to conciliation with China, and escalated pressure on Venezuela amid strikes that legal experts say produced at least 43 civilian deaths. On Ukraine, he swung from contemplating Tomahawks to urging a cease-fire, then sanctioned Russian oil, leaving allies unsure as he departs for Asia.

After eight trips to Washington, Ryosei Akazawa secured a deal that swapped lower‑than‑threatened U.S. tariffs for a $550 billion Japanese fund to finance American projects chosen at President Trump’s direction, with profits largely flowing to the United States. Three months on, both governments are still sorting how to invest the money, while Tokyo worries about being pushed into ill‑suited projects under threat of higher tariffs. As new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi prepares to meet Mr. Trump, she has kept the pact intact but questioned its “unequal” aspects and retained Mr. Akazawa as economy minister.

UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall will undergo further eye tests after his title defense against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 ended in a no contest. Gane accidentally poked the Briton in both eyes while throwing a punch late in round one of the Abu Dhabi headliner. Aspinall told referee Jason Herzog, “I can’t see,” and the bout was waved off, leaving him champion. He was taken to hospital and skipped the post-fight news conference. The 32-year-old, who endured major knee surgery in 2022, later called the sport “dangerous” and said eye injuries feel “way scarier.”

US stock futures rose Sunday after US and Chinese representatives agreed on a trade-deal framework that could avert tariffs up to 157%, while investors bet on a rate cut. Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures gained 0.65%, 0.74% and 0.92%. The Dow closed above 47,000 Friday after CPI showed inflation heated up but less than expected. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent voiced optimism ahead of a Thursday Trump–Xi meeting in South Korea, hinting at a deferral on rare-earth export controls. The prospective deal may bring relief to farmers, notably soybean growers, after China halted US purchases in May.

Food banks already strained by inflation and federal cuts are bracing for a surge as the nearly monthlong government shutdown threatens to halt SNAP funding in November, affecting about 42 million people. Leaders from Oregon to Washington, D.C., say demand now far outstrips supply—pantries can replace just one of every nine federally supported meals. Visits have jumped 50% in Oregon and doubled around the capital. In Beltsville, Md., a giveaway for unpaid federal workers ran out after 45 minutes, echoing warnings that children, seniors and rural communities will go hungry if contingency funds remain untapped.

A Jets celebration in Cincinnati ended a day that began on a somber note. Longtime center Nick Mangold died at 41 after battling kidney disease, and head coach Aaron Glenn opened his postgame remarks by remembering him as “the heart and soul of the team.” Glenn, who scouted during Mangold’s 11 Jets seasons, offered prayers to Mangold’s family and called him “a true Jet.” Mangold, a two-time All-Pro and member of the team’s Ring of Honor, will likely be honored further when the Jets return home after their Week 9 bye.
