Google is opening a preview of its redesigned Fitbit app on Android starting October 28, but many features are missing. Eligible users—Android owners with Fitbit Premium and a compatible Fitbit or Pixel Watch—can test an AI-powered Fitbit Coach with an “Ask Coach” chat. During the preview, menstrual, nutrition, hydration, glucose, and temperature tracking are unavailable, as are sleep edits, heart-rate zone analysis, social features, badges, TCX export, Aria Air syncing, and Health Connect can’t import exercise sessions, routes, or health metrics from third-party apps. If gaps sting, users can switch back via the app’s “Switch app version” setting.

The Chiefs shook off a shaky start and routed the Commanders 28-7, their third straight win to reach 5-3. After two Patrick Mahomes interceptions and a 7-7 half, Kansas City dominated, outgaining Washington 432-260. Mahomes threw second-half touchdowns to Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice; Kelce’s score was his 83rd, tying Priest Holmes for the team record. Mahomes finished with 299 yards. Kelce had 99 yards; Rice 93. Isiah Pacheco later limped off. For Washington, Marcus Mariota started for injured Jayden Daniels, hit Terry McLaurin for the lone touchdown, and the club left with multiple injuries.

Europe’s largest lender HSBC beat quarterly profit expectations, posting $7.3 billion in pre-tax profit for the three months to September versus a $5.98 billion consensus, even as profit fell nearly 14% year on year on higher costs. Revenue reached $17.8 billion. The bank booked $1.4 billion in legal provisions, including $1.1 billion tied to Bernard Madoff-related claims, and will pursue further appeals in Luxembourg. Net interest income rose 15% to $8.8 billion; the Madoff provision will trim the CET1 ratio by about 15 bps. HSBC also outlined plans to take Hang Seng Bank private.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to unflinching, fact-based journalism and thanked readers for support that bolstered its newsroom during uncertain times. That initial backing, it says, kept the team strong. As work continues, the organization is asking for renewed help and inviting readers to join once again.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the state will send its own observers to watch federal election monitors deployed by the Trump administration ahead of a Nov. 4 vote tied to Democrats’ redistricting plans. Responding to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi’s move to monitor six jurisdictions, including five California counties, Bonta called the plan “unnecessary but welcome” and vowed no interference beyond the law. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber denounced the federal presence as intimidation. Federal monitoring will cover Kern, Riverside, Fresno, Orange and Los Angeles counties, plus Passaic County, New Jersey.

On an Iowa farm, Burleen and Pete Wobeter watched their lone bright spot—cattle—dim after President Trump said he would quadruple beef imports from Argentina to lower prices, sending wholesale cattle prices tumbling. Soybean sales to China had already vanished, leaving bins full and budgets tight. Ranchers say they’re earning less even as shoppers pay more: ground beef up nearly 13% and steak 16%, amid drought, costly feed, and a decades-low herd. Industry leaders doubt added Argentine supply—about 2.5%—will matter. The administration announced $3 billion in aid, with larger relief and new trade deals floated.

On a packed day in Tokyo, President Donald Trump met Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, congratulating Japan’s first female leader and hailing a “new golden age” in ties. The pair signed accords to bolster U.S.-Japan cooperation on critical and rare earth minerals, creating a Rapid Response Group and complementary stockpiles, in a move aimed at balancing China’s tightened exports. Trump will visit troops aboard the USS George Washington and meet business leaders later. Japan gifted him Shinzo Abe’s putter and a Hideki Matsuyama–signed golf bag. He also left open a constitutionally barred third-term bid.

Democrats remain unmoved by the largest federal employees union’s renewed demand to reopen the government, extending a shutdown now the second longest in U.S. history and leaving over a million workers unpaid, some turning to food pantries. Senate Democrat Dick Durbin said AFGE’s plea has a lot of impact but predicted no shift, as Democrats resist a short-term funding bill through November 21 without movement on health care costs. Republicans argue the government should reopen first and have offered the CR; Speaker Mike Johnson hopes the union’s push becomes a turning point.

Mexican journalist Miguel Ángel Beltrán, who covered drug cartels, was found dead Saturday on the highway linking Durango and Mazatlán, his body wrapped in a blanket with a note beside it, Contexto de Durango reported. Local media said the note read, "For spreading false accusations against the people of Durango"; CNN could not confirm its contents and has reached out to the state prosecutor’s office for more information. Identified by his son, Beltrán had recently posted on TikTok about a suspected gang leader’s arrest. He is the ninth journalist killed in Mexico this year, according to Reporters Without Borders.

Seeking to speed deportations, the Trump administration plans to reassign at least a dozen ICE field office directors—potentially replacing about half with Border Patrol officials—amid frustration over arrest totals, officials say. ICE averages 1,178 arrests daily, far short of the 3,000 pushed by Stephen Miller. Border Patrol has deployed more than 1,500 agents and used tactics like Black Hawk rappels in Chicago, prompting lawsuits. Greg Bovino, who has overseen recent operations, is due before a federal judge Tuesday over alleged excessive force. DHS declined comment; the White House said the team is acting in lockstep.
