Miami’s latest mayoral contest reads like a family saga. On Tuesday, three candidates hail from political dynasties: Joe Carollo shares the ballot with his brother, City Commission hopeful Frank Carollo, while Xavier Suarez is the father of current Mayor Francis X. Suarez. Joe Carollo, 70, and Xavier Suarez, 76, once faced off in 1997, a race overturned by a judge for widespread voter fraud, making Carollo mayor; Suarez was not accused of wrongdoing. Thirteen contenders seek the part-time post with veto and hiring powers, and a Dec. 9 runoff looms if no one tops 50 percent.

Nine months into his second term, President Donald Trump is pursuing a Reagan-tinged “peace through strength” agenda marked by tariffs, military moves and nuclear testing hints. During an Asia trip, he canceled Canada trade talks, added a 10% tariff, the Navy struck suspected Pacific drug boats, and the USS Ford shifted toward Venezuela amid a major Latin America buildup. He teased possible nuclear testing and touted June strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Officials argue unpredictability boosts leverage, but a retired ambassador faults the lack of process, and an analyst warns against open-ended conflicts.

As the shutdown entered a second month, Washington’s stalemate squeezed basic needs nationwide. Federal judges blocked the Trump administration’s plan to freeze SNAP payments, but loading delays still threaten grocery budgets for millions. With Congress absent—the House idle for weeks and the Senate closed for the weekend—air travel slowdowns and missed paychecks mounted. The Affordable Care Act enrollment period opened amid warnings of sharp premium hikes as enhanced tax credits are set to lapse; KFF estimates increases of about 114% or more than $1,000 a year. Both parties traded blame while offering no clear path forward.

Rep. Nancy Mace allegedly berated police assigned to escort her at Charleston International Airport, calling them 'expletive' incompetent, a report says. Officers waited from 6:30 a.m. for a white BMW they never saw; surveillance video shows Mace arriving around 6:50 in a dark sedan and reaching a TSA entrance, where officers arrived about seven minutes later. She allegedly cursed throughout the walk to her gate, upsetting staff, the report states. On X, Mace posted video and defended using the entrance. Her office cited security concerns and rising threats, without addressing the alleged remarks.

At Rogers Centre, the Blue Jays’ ninth-inning rally in World Series Game 6 unraveled when Addison Barger was doubled off second on Andrés Giménez’s looper to left, sealing the Dodgers’ 3-1 win. Moments earlier, Barger’s gap shot stuck under the wall for a ground-rule double, wiping away a would-be run and leaving Toronto with two in scoring position. Tyler Glasnow induced a pop-up before Kiké Hernandez’s catch and a throw snagged by Miguel Rojas ended it. “Bad read,” Barger said, as manager John Schneider called it a tough play. Game 7 is Saturday night in Toronto.

Yale researchers say satellite images indicate mass killings are likely continuing in and around El-Fasher, days after the Rapid Support Forces seized the city following an 18-month siege. The Humanitarian Research Lab identified at least 31 clusters consistent with human bodies and observed RSF activity as reports of executions, sexual violence, looting and attacks on aid workers persist amid a communications blackout. Survivors describe children shot and civilians robbed while fleeing. Germany’s top diplomat called the situation apocalyptic; Britain’s called it truly horrifying. The U.N. says over 65,000 have fled as violence spreads toward Kordofan.

At President Donald Trump’s behest, the $13 billion USS Gerald R. Ford and its escorts are heading to the Caribbean for a major anti-drug mission. The deployment, described by analysts as unprecedented for counternarcotics, follows operations that sank four smuggling boats and left 14 dead, amid legal concerns and minimal congressional oversight. Experts suspect a broader aim focused on Venezuela, where Washington rejects Nicolas Maduro’s 2025 election and a covert CIA operation was approved. Maduro denounces a grave provocation and orders coastal drills, while regional governments weigh responses and resources loom large in the standoff.

Washington’s confrontation with Nicolás Maduro is escalating, with the US mounting its largest regional naval deployment since 1962 and preparing strikes on Venezuelan sites tied to drug smuggling, reports say. The Trump administration has authorized covert CIA operations and raised a bounty for Maduro to $50m, while an alleged bid to bribe his pilot surfaced. Ex-intelligence officials warn any capture attempt could turn lethal. Past failed plots and regional coup history loom, yet analysts say domestic support for ousting Maduro is thin, casting doubt on a swift, democratic transition.

Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea may carry hidden risks for the brain, a study in JAMA Network Open reports, linking the condition to a higher likelihood of new cerebral microbleeds. Such tiny bleeds, common with aging, are tied to slightly increased stroke risk and faster cognitive decline, experts said, urging clinicians to screen and patients to treat sleep apnea. The observational research cannot prove causation, but doctors warn against shrugging off loud snoring, gasping, or daytime sleepiness—signs that merit evaluation, along with night sweats, frequent awakenings, teeth grinding, and morning headaches.

Egypt inaugurated the long-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids, billed as the world’s largest museum devoted to an ancient civilization and a centerpiece of efforts to revive tourism and the economy. The GEM houses more than 50,000 artifacts and, for the first time since 1922, the complete treasures of King Tutankhamun. World leaders were set to attend an elaborate opening highlighted by a drone light show and orchestral performance. Officials expect up to 5 million visitors a year. The museum opens to the public Nov. 4.
