Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited Frankenstein reunited him with sculptor Mike Hill, who first created a Karloff makeup sculpture for the director. After Hill feared being overlooked, del Toro said the film hinged on his participation. Following a brief theatrical run, it streams on Netflix November 7. Hill devised a tall, lean creature with geometric scars, avoiding heavy stitching and drawing on 18th-century surgery. Jacob Elordi ultimately embodied the role; his full-body look used 42 prosthetic pieces and about 10 hours of makeup. The design shifts from bald innocence to cloaked menace, mirroring the character’s transformation.

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, spent Sunday night in Section 212 at Madison Square Garden, wearing a Knicks jersey and blending in with fans as the team routed the Bulls. His low-key visit contrasted with third-party rival Andrew M. Cuomo’s recent courtside outing beside Mayor Eric Adams, which Mamdani had criticized online as "Corruption goes courtside." After watching the Buffalo Bills with Gov. Kathy Hochul in Queens, Mamdani sang along to arena tunes, reflected on campaign jitters, and slipped out with little fanfare; nearby spectators hadn’t recognized him.

The Prince and Princess of Wales hosted a thank-you party at The York Club to salute builders and staff who sped up their move into Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park. The family has left Adelaide Cottage — which William is said to call 'cursed' — after a half-term push to settle their children, with a Home Office-agreed security cordon now in place around the eight-bedroom Georgian home. They are funding the move and paying market rent, and plan to remain there long term. William next travels to Brazil for Earthshot events and to represent his father at COP30.

Microsoft has agreed to spend about $9.7 billion on artificial intelligence computing capacity from IREN Ltd., making the Sydney-based firm’s largest customer. The five-year deal gives Microsoft access to Nvidia systems in Texas built for AI workloads and includes a 20% prepayment, IREN said Monday. To fulfill the agreement, IREN agreed to buy $5.8 billion in graphics processing units and related equipment from Dell Technologies.

Week 9 delivered dramatic finishes: Bears’ last-second 58-yard TD by Colston Loveland from Caleb Williams to win 47-42 at Bengals after Joe Flacco-led rally and onside kick; Bills beat Chiefs 28-21 behind Josh Allen’s near-perfect day; Vikings edged Lions 27-24 as J.J. McCarthy converted a clutch third down; Washington’s Jayden Daniels dislocated his elbow in a 38-14 loss to Seattle; Jaguars’ Cam Little drilled a record 68-yarder in a 30-29 OT win; last-second FGs lifted Panthers and Broncos, while a missed PAT doomed the Falcons.

The government shutdown is forcing widespread Head Start closures, leaving working parents scrambling for child care and cutting off meals and therapy for vulnerable children. Dozens missed federal grants due Nov. 1; 140 programs remain unfunded with capacity for 65,000. Some shut indefinitely while others rely on short-term aid. Twenty-four Migrant and Seasonal centers in five states closed, affecting over 1,100 children and furloughing about 900 staff, with some parents considering bringing kids to fields. SNAP worries eased after court orders, but from Ohio to Kansas City to Washington state and rural Florida, distress is mounting.

A CNN/SSRS poll of 1,245 U.S. adults, conducted Oct. 27–30, finds President Donald Trump at a record 63% disapproval and 37% approval, his second-term low. Majorities judge the economy poor (72%) and say Trump’s policies, including tariffs, have worsened conditions (61%); 56% say his foreign policy has damaged America’s standing, and 57% call his mass deportation plans too far. The mood could bite next November: 41% say their vote will oppose Trump versus 21% in support, independents prefer Democrats 44–31, and more voters rule out Republicans than Democrats.

At a Mass for deceased cardinals and bishops, Pope Leo XIV prayed for their purification and that they might shine like stars, and asked that their quiet encouragement sustain the living. He remembered with affection Pope Francis, who died after opening the Holy Door and giving the Easter Blessing, saying the Jubilee lends the Mass the flavor of Christian hope. Reflecting on Emmaus, he condemned violent death, affirmed Christ alone redeems it, and called Easter hope a transforming gift that makes death a sister. He praised the late shepherds as witnesses and teachers of Paschal hope.

More than 36,000 people have fled North Kordofan since El Fasher fell to the Rapid Support Forces on 26 October. Between 26 and 31 October, 36,825—most on foot—moved toward Tawila, already sheltering over 652,000 displaced, the UN said. Residents report surging RSF and army movements as both sides vie for El Obeid; RSF says its forces massed at Bara after claiming the town. Martha Pobee, assistant UN secretary general for Africa, warned of large-scale atrocities and ethnically motivated reprisals by RSF. Pope Leo urged a ceasefire and aid corridors, while Sudan’s ambassador to Egypt accused RSF of war crimes.

During a CBS 60 Minutes interview, Donald Trump pulled a printed list from his pocket, claiming he has ended eight of nine wars since taking office, citing conflicts from Armenia and Azerbaijan to Israel and Hamas. He touted himself as a peacemaker after the Nobel Committee overlooked him in favor of Venezuela’s Maria Corina Machado. Critics quickly disputed his boasts, noting unresolved or mischaracterized disputes and continued fighting in places like eastern DRC, as well as his recent threats toward Nigeria and ongoing Caribbean strikes that legal experts warn may violate domestic and international law.
