Former President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that Sunny, the family's 13-year-old Portuguese water dog, has died. Sunny passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. She originally joined the Obama family in August 2013 during his second term in the White House, serving as a high-profile companion alongside the family's first dog, Bo, who died in May 2021. In a social media tribute, Obama remembered Sunny as athletic, full of energy, and protective, noting that she brought immense joy both during their time in Washington and throughout their post-presidency life. Sunny became well-known globally as a symbol of modern presidential pets, capturing public interest alongside Bo. The announcement drew widespread public sympathy and extensive media coverage across the United States. Although the family faced brief public attention over minor incidents during her White House years, Sunny remained a cherished household companion for over a decade.
