The Colorado Avalanche agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension with head coach Jared Bednar through the 2030–31 NHL season. Announced on September 30, 2026, ahead of Colorado's season opener against the Los Angeles Kings, the extension secures the winningest head coach in franchise history. Bednar, who was hired in August 2016 following Patrick Roy's resignation, has compiled a 445–262–75 regular-season record and led Colorado to a Stanley Cup championship in 2022. He trails only Jon Cooper of the Tampa Bay Lightning as the second-longest tenured active head coach in the NHL. The coaching extension follows a major offseason transaction where defenseman Cale Makar signed an eight-year, $163.2 million extension. Team captain Gabriel Landeskog and core players publicly voiced support for the decision, confirming organizational alignment around Bednar following a Western Conference Final playoff exit.
