Trump Leans Into Showmanship on Day 1 of His Asia Trip

President Trump arrived in Kuala Lumpur to open a nearly weeklong Asia tour, greeting crowds before riding with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He quickly presided over a Cambodia–Thailand peace deal, then inked separate pacts on reciprocal trade and critical minerals, plus trade agreements with Malaysia and, later, a U.S.–Vietnam framework. Tariffs largely stayed intact — 19 percent for Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia; 20 percent for Vietnam — while partners pledged help in containing China. U.S.–China negotiators reported a “substantial framework,” ahead of Trump’s first in-person meeting with Xi this week. His hoarse voice betrayed the hectic schedule.
