Part of the medieval Torre dei Conti near the Colosseum collapsed Monday, seriously injuring a worker and trapping another. Officials said the trapped worker had shown signs of life, but the unstable structure made the rescue a long, risky operation. Two other workers suffered minor injuries after the initial collapse on scaffolding and were pulled to safety by a fire department ladder truck. Police barricades blocked streets leading to the tower as emergency vehicles and several fire trucks surrounded the nearly 100-foot structure, which had been under a four-year restoration tentatively set to finish in 2026.
