South Korea's Lee asks China's Xi for help engaging North Korea

Chinese President Xi Jinping met South Korea's Lee Jae Myung in Gyeongju, saying Beijing wants to widen cooperation and tackle shared challenges, while Lee asked for China's help to revive talks with North Korea. Lee, elected in June, touted a phased denuclearisation plan beginning with engagement and a freeze, even as Pyongyang called that a 'pipe dream.' At the APEC summit, leaders issued a joint statement backing regional economic cooperation after Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to deescalate trade tensions, reaffirming commitment to the Putrajaya Vision 2040.
