Netanyahu Orders Strikes on Gaza, as Israel Says Hamas Violated Cease-Fire

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, ordered "forceful" strikes in Gaza on Tuesday night after his office accused Hamas of breaking the cease-fire by firing on Israeli forces and refusing to return the bodies of dead hostages. Spokesman David Mencer said Hamas had violated the framework; the group did not immediately respond. An Israeli military official, speaking anonymously, reported attacks on Israeli forces in Rafah, southern Gaza. The truce, in place since earlier this month, has frayed amid flare-ups; last week Israel struck sites across Gaza after clashes that killed two soldiers, yet both sides reaffirmed the cease-fire.
