Maldives enforces generational tobacco ban Saturday

The Maldives began enforcing a generational tobacco prohibition on Saturday, becoming the only country to bar anyone born on or after January 1, 2007—including visitors—from buying, using, or being sold tobacco, the Health Ministry said. Retailers must verify age, and the measure, initiated by President Mohamed Muizzu earlier this year, aims to protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation. The ministry also maintains a comprehensive ban on importing, selling, distributing, possessing, and using electronic cigarettes and vaping products for all ages. Penalties include 50,000 rufiyaa for selling to underage people and 5,000 rufiyaa for using vape devices.
