Maldives has begun enforcing a generational smoking ban, making it the only country to bar tobacco for those born on or after 1 January 2007, the health ministry said. Initiated by President Mohamed Muizzu, the measure took effect on 1 November, applies to visitors and requires retailers to verify ages. All tobacco products are covered, and a comprehensive ban on electronic cigarettes and vaping applies to all ages. Penalties include 50,000 rufiyaa for selling to an underage person and 5,000 rufiyaa for using vape devices. The UK is debating a similar plan, while New Zealand repealed it in 2023.
