Before dawn in Vila Cruzeiro, dozens of corpses lay along the favela’s main road after Rio’s deadliest police operation. Authorities said a force of 2,500 stormed Alemão and Penha, leaving at least 132 dead by early Wednesday, including four police officers, surpassing the Carandiru toll. Residents and activists accused police of executions as pickup trucks deposited bodies in a plaza; a priest prayed over the dead. Governor Cláudio Castro defended a “harsh blow” against “narco-terrorists”; the UN rights office said it was horrified.
