Former deputy convicted of second degree murder

After a jury convicted former sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson of second-degree murder in the fatal kitchen shooting of 36-year-old Sonya Massey, her father voiced anger, saying a harsher verdict was warranted. Jurors deliberated about 12 hours before finding Grayson guilty on a lesser count; he faces up to 20 years at a January sentencing. The trial centered on disturbing body-camera video, as prosecutors said he failed to render aid and the defense claimed self-defense. Grayson’s mother apologized to the family. Sangamon County settled for $10 million earlier this year.
