Dick Cheney, Powerful Vice President and Washington Insider, Dies at 84

Dick Cheney, 84, widely viewed as the most powerful vice president in American history, died Monday from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, his family said. A former defense secretary and congressman, Cheney was George W. Bush’s most influential White House adviser after Sept. 11, shaping the Patriot Act, warrantless surveillance and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. He battled heart disease for decades and received a transplant in 2012. In recent years, he denounced Donald J. Trump as unfit and said he would vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.
