California police investigate theft of 1,000 items from Oakland museum

Oakland police are investigating the early Oct. 15 burglary of an off-site storage facility that stripped the Oakland Museum of California of more than 1,000 items, from Native American baskets and scrimshaw walrus tusks to metalwork jewelry and 20th century memorabilia. Director Lori Fogarty called it a crime of opportunity and asked the public to watch flea markets, antique stores and pawn shops. Police are working with an FBI art-crime unit. A retired LAPD captain said the goods may already be resold online for quick cash. The museum previously recovered a stolen artifact in 2013 with public help.
