Alaska storm damage could displace some evacuees for at least 18 months, officials say

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy asked the White House for a major disaster declaration after remnants of Typhoon Halong devastated remote western villages, killing one person and leaving two missing. In Kipnuk, 90% of homes were destroyed; in Kwigillingok, more than a third are uninhabitable after some floated away. More than 2,000 residents have been displaced, many unlikely to return for at least 18 months. Anchorage is receiving evacuees—about 575 so far, with up to 1,600 expected—as officials shift people from shelters to temporary and longer-term housing. Federal agencies and Texas are assisting, while local leaders pledge support.
