Remnants of Typhoon Halong unleashed historic flooding across western Alaska, destroying remote communities and forcing mass evacuations that will continue for days, officials said. Water topped six feet in places, with 50–100 mph gusts battering 49 communities, including hard-hit Kipnuk. At least one person is dead and two are missing; no further missing are suspected. The Alaska National Guard and private charters evacuated 264 people Thursday and 211 Wednesday, sheltering about 300 on a C-17. About 2,000 are displaced as donations exceed $1 million, and a federal disaster declaration has been requested.
