Bernardo Bravo, president of the Apatzingan Valley Citrus Producers Association, was found dead in his vehicle on a road in Michoacan on Monday, state prosecutors said. In interviews as recently as this month, he had publicly denounced extortion by organized crime, warning that demands had become untenable and left producers negotiating with criminals. Bravo acknowledged some federal advances but urged stronger action. The killing comes amid pressure on lime growers: troops were deployed last year, and in August more than half of lowland packing warehouses closed after cartels, including Los Viagras, demanded a cut.
