Bernardo Bravo, leader of Michoacan’s Apatzingan Valley citrus producers, was found dead in his vehicle Monday, state prosecutors said, after months of publicly condemning organized crime’s extortion of lime growers. In recent interviews, he warned that criminal demands had become untenable and urged stronger action despite some federal advances. The killing comes as lime producers face renewed pressure: hundreds of troops were deployed last year, and in August more than half of lowland packing warehouses shut temporarily amid cartel demands from groups including Los Viagras.
