Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy entered Paris’s La Santé prison to begin a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy tied to Libyan funding of his 2007 campaign, becoming the first modern French ex-leader to be jailed. He left home hand-in-hand with his wife and posted that “an innocent man” was being locked up. He will be held in solitary confinement. His lawyers called the incarceration a disgrace and filed an immediate request for release pending appeal. Outside, hundreds of supporters sang and waved flags, as President Emmanuel Macron recently received him at the Élysée.
