Perez, currently serving as the Republican speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and a close ally of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was nominated by Trump in early June, according to The Star. A senior official stated that the Brazilian ambassador's visa would be reinstated immediately if the government of Brazil grants approval for the U.S. ambassadorial nominee. The official noted that Washington believes Brasília owes a prompt and positive response regarding the appointment. The Brazilian government issued a formal statement condemning the U.S. measure, asserting that the justifications offered for the decision are false. Brasília argued that the announcement of the U.S. nominee was made public before submitting a formal request for consent, and characterized the visa revocation as part of a deliberate escalation of hostile measures driven by ideological motives. Tensions between the nations have intensified over recent months across multiple fronts, including trade measures, judicial investigations, and regional policies. Last month, the United States imposed 25 percent tariffs on imports from Brazil, citing unfair trade practices and regulations affecting U.S. technology platforms. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the unilateral tariffs and criticized previous U.S. classifications of certain Brazilian criminal organizations. The diplomatic rift has also intersected with domestic political developments in Brazil, where upcoming presidential elections are scheduled for October.
