Orkin noted that densely populated areas and locations with high resident and visitor turnover, such as apartments, dorms and hotels, can create more opportunities for bed bugs to spread. Orkin entomologist Dr. Shannon Sked urged travelers to inspect hotel rooms and luggage because bed bugs are resilient, hide in cracks and personal belongings, and can be difficult to control once introduced into a home or room. The company recommends using the S.L.E.E.P. routine — search the room, lift linens and cushions, elevate luggage, examine belongings when repacking, and place dryer-safe clothing in a dryer for 30 to 45 minutes after returning home.
