Tampa, Fla., entered the top 50 of Orkin's 2026 bed bug cities list for the first time, placing 46th overall, the company said. Orkin's ranking highlights several summer destinations experiencing bed bug activity and named Myrtle Beach among other coastal entries, with Myrtle Beach appearing at No. 50. The list is based on Orkin treatment records and includes the most residential and commercial bed bug treatments performed from May 12, 2025, to May 12, 2026. Orkin noted that densely populated areas and locations with high resident and visitor turnover, such as apartments, dorms and hotels, can create more opportunities for bed bugs to spread. Orkin entomologist Dr. Shannon Sked urged travelers to inspect hotel rooms and luggage because bed bugs are resilient, hide in cracks and personal belongings, and can be difficult to control once introduced into a home or room. The company recommends using the S.L.E.E.P. routine — search the room, lift linens and cushions, elevate luggage, examine belongings when repacking, and place dryer-safe clothing in a dryer for 30 to 45 minutes after returning home.

Why This Matters to You

Bed bugs aren't just a nuisance, they're a health concern. If you live in or plan to visit Tampa or Myrtle Beach, be aware. High-traffic areas like apartments, dorms, and hotels are hotspots. Before you unpack, use Orkin's S.L.E.E.P. routine to check your room.

The Bottom Line

Bed bugs are resilient and can be hard to control once they've settled in. Your best defense is prevention. Inspect your surroundings and belongings when traveling. Remember, a quick spin in the dryer for your clothes can help. Worth forwarding if you know someone visiting these areas soon.
