Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka imposed a curfew early Sunday around Delaney Hall as protests over a detainee hunger and labor strike grew tense. Supporters of the strike, launched May 22 over what detainees call inhumane conditions, have clashed with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, drawing anti-immigration counterprotesters. Citing escalating risks, Baraka said multiple arrests were made and weapons were found. The curfew covers a half-mile area around the facility, closes Doremus Avenue to pedestrians, limits vehicles to official business, and runs nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., with violators warned then removed and cited.
